Tragic Air Show in Chennai Results in Five Fatalities Due to Exhaustion

Chennai: In a devastating incident during an air show organized by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Marina Beach, five spectators succumbed to extreme exhaustion. The event, which attracted thousands of attendees, has been criticized for inadequate management that contributed to the tragic outcomes.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a senior city police official reported that the fatalities occurred under strenuous conditions with one person dying directly on the beachfront and four others in nearby areas, all amidst a large crowd that had gathered to watch the aerial maneuvers of IAF aircraft. The official emphasized that these individuals were part of the massive audience that had assembled for the show.

The event, which took place between 11 am and 1 pm, saw attendees standing under the harsh sun for several hours, with many arriving at least an hour early to secure a good viewing spot. Despite some spectators using umbrellas for protection, the prolonged exposure to the sun led to severe dehydration among the crowd. The intense heat and overcrowding also led to a brief stampede-like situation, during which several people fainted. Following the incident, more than 30 individuals were transported to nearby government hospitals, presenting symptoms related to dehydration.

This unfortunate event has raised concerns regarding the organization and safety measures implemented during large public gatherings, especially in extreme weather conditions.
