The deployment of approximately one million Indian soldiers in the territory, as per the Modi-led Indian occupation regime, is affecting both the local populace and the tourism industry.

According to Kashmir Media Service, January 25th, which is celebrated as India’s National Tourism Day, ironically highlights the difficulties faced by Kashmir’s tourism sector amidst the ongoing restrictions, crackdowns, and military operations. The area, once known for its scenic beauty, now struggles with the implications of a heightened military presence and restricted freedoms.

The controversial revocation of Article 370 in August 2019 has exacerbated tensions in the region, resulting in an increased military footprint and a clampdown on civil liberties. This situation has adversely affected the influx of tourists to the valley, as concerns over safety and freedom of movement have risen.

Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, historically famed for attractions like houseboats on Dal Lake, vibrant marketplaces, and ancient monuments, is now dealing with a stark contrast between its natural beauty and the omnipresent Indian military forces. The frequent imposition of curfews, along with the curtailment of internet services and movement restrictions, has severely impacted the tourism experience.

Local businesses, especially in the hospitality industry, are finding it challenging to operate under these conditions. Hotel occupancy rates have plummeted, and tour operators are struggling to maintain their businesses.

Despite these challenges, there is a lingering hope among the local population that the region will one day realize its right to self-determination. This aspiration is tied to the belief that the true beauty of Jammu and Kashmir can be appreciated freely and without the overbearing shadow of repression.
