Imphal: Three Indian Army personnel have died, and two others have fallen ill due to food poisoning in the northeastern state of Manipur, raising concerns about food safety and hygiene standards within the Indian military.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the deceased soldiers were stationed at Leimaram Waroiching in Kangpokpi district, serving in the Assam Rifles. Officials from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed that a total of five soldiers were admitted to the hospital with symptoms of food poisoning. Three succumbed to their illness, while the other two remain under medical treatment.
The soldiers who lost their lives have been identified as Lance Naik Rama Shankar, Havildar Umesh Kumar, and Warrant Officer Phoolchand. Their bodies are to be sent to their families following the completion of post-mortem examinations.
A doctor from the hospital noted that the soldiers exhibited symptoms indicative of food poisoning but refrained from commenting on the exact cause of death pending the results of the autopsy.
This tragedy brings to light ongoing issues concerning the quality of food and supplies provided to Indian troops stationed in remote regions. Previous incidents have also seen soldiers affected by food poisoning, with recurring complaints regarding the substandard quality of food served in military camps and stations. The recent deaths underscore the challenging provisions and living conditions faced by Indian soldiers while on duty.
