New Delhi, July 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):People from different walks of life including journalists, activists, politicians and social media users have strongly condemned the custodial death of tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr. Stan Swamy, even some described his death as a murder in India under Modi. Social media users expressed their anger and disappointment as Swamy, the oldest political prisoner when he was in jail, passed away at 1.30 pm, today. The tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Fr. Stan Swamy was accused in the Elgar Parishad case. He was 84 years old.
Journalist Rana Ayyub in a tweet said “The Modi government jailed an 84-year-old human rights activist who spent his life working for the less privileged in India. He suffered from Parkinson’s and contracted Covid in hospital. Despite his grave condition, this heartless regime left him to die. THIS IS MURDER”, he said. Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) termed this as “state-sponsored murder” and called out the “the inhuman face of the government”
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti said that a “cruel and callous” government has “blood on its hand”. The activist was arrested in the Bhima Koregaon violence case from Ranchi on October 9, 2020. Swamy was undergoing treatment at the Holy Family Hospital. He had suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday, and doctors were unable to revive him.
