Islamabad, March 02, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Representative of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Mr. Jeremy Milsom, along with his team, called on Mr. Karim Gabol, Focal Person, Parliamentary Development Unit, Senate Secretariat, on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the Parliament House, Islamabad to discuss prospects of a sustainable partnership, between the Senate and UNODC, with the objective of providing assistance to honourable Senators and the Secretariat in the areas of expertise of UNODC.
Various issues of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting. Briefing about his organization’s efforts in Pakistan, Mr. Jeremy said UNODC has been present in Pakistan for the past 40 years working on numerous areas important for national interest of Pakistan i.e., drug demand reduction and prevention, transnational organized crime, corruption, counter-terrorism and support to criminal justice system.
PDU and UNODC discussed and agreed to continue exploring potential areas of cooperation for enhancing the knowledge-base of honourable Senators and building the capacity of the secretariat in important subject areas including; drug prevention, quality assurance assistance, HIV Prevention, Counter-terrorism, and cyber security.
Hence, the two teams agreed to jointly explore possibilities for provision and attachment of experts with Committees of the Senate to assist honourable Senators in key areas. Both sides also acknowledged the importance of cross-parliamentary interactions for the promotion of international best practices and agreed to further discussions for joint working towards that end.
Other participants from UNODC included Mr. Shinji Roberto Nageswara, Programme Management Officer, and Dr. Manzoor-ul-Haq, Adviser, DDR and HIV/AIDS. The UNODC team expressed keen interest in engaging with Honorable Members, Committees and the Secretariat with the intent of enabling frequent discussions on relevant issues at the highest policy-levels.
