Tension in Yadgir district as BJP attempts to rename Tipu Sultan junction

Yadgir, February 28, 2023 (PPI-OT):Tension has gripped Yadgir district in the Indian state of Karnataka as Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is attempting renaming a junction after 18th century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan. Yadgir Municipality, which is run by BJP, is dubbing the Tippu circle near Hattikuni Cross as illegal and attempting to rename it after BJP’s Veer Savarkar. The situation has taken a communal turn threatening the peace, law and order situation in Yadgir city.

On the other hand, fans of Tipu Sultan, mostly from Muslim community, have declared that they won’t allow this to happen at any cost. The authorities have arrested Parashurama Shegurkar, State President of Hindutva organization Shivaji Sena, and his followers. The police also raided the house of North Karnataka Tipu Sultan Samyukta Rang President, Abdul Kareem, who was also booked.

Tipu Sultan’s fans maintain that the city municipality had given permission to name the circle after Tipu Sultan in 2010. Earlier, it was called Maulana Abdul Kalam circle. However, Hindutva groups claim that the circle is named after Tipu Sultan without permission from the Municipality. The Hindutva groups with the help of BJP state government are demanding renaming of the circle after Veer Savarkar.

They even made an attempt to remove the name of the circle but the police had foiled the bid. The authorities had also clamped Prohibitory orders. It is to mention here that as elections are nearing in the state, the ruling BJP government is likely to accept the proposal of naming the circle after Veer Savarkar to get support of Hindu voters.
