Tension in Nashik as Karnataka-Maharashtra border row escalates

New Delhi, December 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Tension prevails in Nashik city as the border row between the Indian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra escalates. Maharashtra organisation, Swarajya Sangathan, protested in Nashik, today, against the Karnataka border issue. The protesters sprayed black ink on banner of Karnataka bank and raised slogans. Maharashtra, since its inception in 1960, has been entangled in a dispute with Karnataka over the status of Belgaum district and 80 other Marathi-speaking villages, which are in the control of Karnataka.

The Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai recently sought a merger of “Kannada-speaking” areas in Maharashtra’s Akkalkot and Solapur and had also said some villages in Jat taluka in Sangli district wanted to join Karnataka. Belgaum or Belagavi is currently part of Karnataka but is claimed by Maharashtra. After the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute escalated, many untoward incidents took place in Belagavi. On the other hand, police personnel in large numbers have been deployed in Karnataka-Maharashtra border region.
