New Delhi, Thol. Thirumavalavan, a Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu, has openly criticized the decision to consider BJP leader L.K. Advani for India’s top civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, citing Advani’s career as being marked by divisiveness and offenses.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Thirumavalavan, representing the Chidambaram constituency and founder of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), articulated that Advani’s political journey has been characterized by the propagation of majoritarian hate against minorities, making him unworthy of such an honor. He emphasized that Advani’s contributions to Indian politics have been detrimental, particularly highlighting his role in promoting Hindutva ideologies, which Thirumavalavan argues have sown discord and chaos within Indian society.
The Tamil Nadu lawmaker detailed several controversial actions attributed to Advani, including his involvement in the Rath Yatra that led to widespread violence against Muslims and the demolition of the Babri Masjid, an event that remains a significant point of contention in India’s secular fabric. These actions, As per Thirumavalavan, have not only fueled communal tensions but have also laid the groundwork for the problems plaguing Indian society today.
Thirumavalavan’s critique comes amid discussions of awarding Advani, noted for his staunch Hindutva stance and significant influence in shaping BJP’s ideological direction, the Bharat Ratna. This proposal has reignited debate over the criteria and figures selected for India’s highest civilian recognition, reflecting the ongoing struggle over the country’s secular identity and the recognition of its leaders’ legacies.
