Delhi, A group of farmers from Tamil Nadu staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Wednesday, demanding better crop prices and addressing the issue of river interlinking in India. The demonstration saw some participants attempting to climb a mobile tower, requiring police intervention to ensure their safety.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesting farmers, including a woman, aimed to draw attention to their grievances by attempting to climb the mobile tower. This prompted authorities to use a fire brigade crane to bring them down safely. The Delhi Government reported that a large number of Tamil Nadu farmers had gathered at Jantar Mantar, with some also attempting to climb nearby trees.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla confirmed the incident, stating, “Around 50 people gathered for river interlinking. Two of them attempted to climb a mobile tower but were eventually brought back to the ground. Others also attempted to climb trees in the vicinity.”
The protesting farmers, estimated to number around 100, emphasized their demands during the demonstration. They called for a doubling of their income from agricultural produce, a pension of Rs 5,000, individual insurance coverage, and the interlinking of all rivers across India. The police’s swift response helped prevent any accidents or injuries during the protest.
The protest highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in Tamil Nadu and across India, with demands for better financial support and infrastructure improvements resonating among agricultural communities.
