Islamabad: The destruction of mosques, shrines, and religious sites across India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is part of a systematic effort to marginalize Muslims and strip them of their religious rights, as per a report released by Kashmir Media Service.
According to Kashmir Media Service, these demolitions reflect a broader Hindutva-driven campaign to erase the Islamic heritage in India, highlighting a deep-rooted anti-Muslim agenda that has become institutionalized under Modi’s government. The BJP, guided by a radical Hindu ideology, seeks to elevate Hindu supremacy while relegating Muslims and other minorities to a second-class status, depriving them of their constitutional rights to freely practice their faith.
Since Modi assumed power in 2014, there has been a marked increase in violence against Muslims, the report said. Documented incidents include lynchings, attacks on religious sites, and hate speech. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have both reported on the growing impunity with which radical Hindu groups operate, encouraged by state support.
The report emphasizes that the targeting of Islamic religious structures serves as a battleground for an ideological war aimed at eradicating the Muslim identity in India. This ongoing demolition campaign is seen as a violation of international human rights, including the right to freedom of religion, as protected by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Legislative measures such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are seen as further institutionalizing the exclusion of Muslims, the report noted. It highlighted that organizations such as the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) have designated India as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to the growing persecution of Muslims.
The report concludes by calling on the international community, including the United Nations, to take immediate action to prevent further religious persecution and hold the Indian government accountable for its violations of religious freedoms. It warns that under Modi’s leadership, India risks becoming a nation where Muslims are denied their fundamental rights to live and practice their religion without fear.
