Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Advocates for Pakistan’s Blue Economy on World Oceans Day

Islamabad, On World Oceans Day, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani highlighted the significant economic and environmental potential of Pakistan’s marine resources, emphasizing the strategic importance of the nation’s coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone.

According to Senate of Pakistan, in his address themed “Awaken New Depths,” Gilani outlined the abundant opportunities presented by Pakistan’s geographical and oceanic position. He noted the country’s 1,000 kilometers of coastline and a 290,000 square kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone as critical assets for fostering economic activities such as transportation, tourism, shipbuilding, and port development.

The Chairman’s remarks stressed the balance required between exploiting these resources and maintaining environmental stewardship. He emphasized the challenges of sustainability and responsible resource management that are central to leveraging the ocean’s wealth.

Gilani also highlighted the declaration of 2020 as the ‘Year of Blue Economy of Pakistan’ as a testament to the country’s commitment to utilizing these opportunities for sustainable growth. He called for a renewed commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems and promoting equitable access to ocean resources, reflecting Pakistan’s dedication to advancing its economic interests in harmony with environmental preservation.

On this World Oceans Day, Gilani urged all Pakistanis to recognize the value of their maritime heritage and support initiatives aimed at developing a sustainable and prosperous blue economy.
