Swiss Tourist Found Murdered in Delhi After Online Dating Encounter

New Delhi, The safety of women in India is once again under the microscope, with the recent murder of a Swiss national in the capital city of New Delhi highlighting concerns.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, 36-year-old Swiss woman, Nina Berger, was discovered dead outside a school in west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar on October 18. The body was chained and partially wrapped in a plastic bag. Gurpreet Singh, who had met Berger in Zurich, Switzerland, through the dating app Omegle, has been identified as the prime suspect in the case.

The association between Singh and Berger started in 2021 in Zurich, where Singh had traveled to visit relatives. The duo met through the app, and Singh later invited her to Delhi. However, conflicts arose over their differing expectations for the relationship, with Singh wanting a more committed relationship than Berger was willing to offer. As disclosed during police interrogations, in a tragic culmination of these differences, Singh strangled Berger.

The grim discovery of Berger’s body came to light around 9 a.m. on October 18, when a passerby spotted it and informed the local police. The deceased showed signs of strangulation, leading to a subsequent murder investigation. In an attempt to track down the suspect, investigators reviewed footage from multiple CCTV cameras in the vicinity. One of the cameras captured a white Santro car, which eventually led the police to Singh, who resides with his family in an upscale neighborhood in Janakpuri.

Detailed confessions by Singh unveiled the horrific sequence of events leading up to the murder. On the fateful day, he had lured Berger with the promise of a “big surprise,” subsequently restraining her with chains. After strangling her in an isolated location, he abandoned the car with Berger’s body inside, thinking the tinted windows and blinders would conceal the crime. However, two days later, the decomposing body began to emit a foul odor. In a panicked move, Singh partially wrapped the body in plastic and left it near the school.
