Suicide of CRPF Officer in Odisha Raises Alarm Over Mental Health in Security Forces

Bhawanipatna: A tragic incident unfolded as a member of the Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Arjun Charan Nayak, was found deceased, having apparently committed suicide in Odisha. This case has spotlighted the escalating concerns regarding mental health issues within India’s security forces.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Nayak, part of the CRPF’s 64 Battalion which is actively involved in anti-Naxalite operations, was found hanging at the CRPF Colony in the Bhawanipatna area of Kalahandi district. Local police recovered his body from outside the staff quarters and have sent it for postmortem to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

This incident coincides with the sudden death of Indian Coast Guard Director General Rakesh Pal from cardiac arrest in Chennai, further underscoring the stress and health risks associated with service in high-pressure environments.

The repeated instances of suicides and unexpected deaths among personnel of the CRPF and other Indian forces are drawing attention to the critical need for improved mental health support and working conditions. Factors such as continuous deployment in conflict zones and inadequate support mechanisms are contributing to the mental strain experienced by these personnel.
