Sugar Advisory Board Approves 500,000 Tons Import to Stabilize Market

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, chaired a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board in Islamabad, where the Board approved the import of 500,000 metric tons of sugar. This decision comes in response to recent market disruptions and aims to stabilize the market and protect consumers from inflation.

The Minister announced that the necessary formalities for importing the sugar will be completed shortly, allowing the imported sugar to enter the domestic market soon. This measure is part of broader efforts to restore confidence in the supply system and maintain consistent sugar availability.

Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that disruptions in the supply chain, along with non-compliance by mill owners, have led to market volatility and price increases. These price hikes have not only affected household budgets but have also increased the cost of various food items, impacting ordinary citizens.

To combat these issues, the Ministry plans to implement strict monitoring and enforcement in collaboration with provincial governments. These actions aim to ensure transparency in sugar distribution, prevent hoarding, and curb profiteering, thereby safeguarding consumer interests.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure food security and market stability through timely interventions and structural reforms. He highlighted the import decision as a proactive measure to curb inflation and keep essential commodities accessible.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research will continue to closely monitor market trends, remaining committed to protecting public interests through responsible governance and effective market regulation.
