Standing Committee Urges Reconsideration of Pak PWD Closure

Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Housing and Works has raised concerns regarding the planned closure of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD), requesting the government to reconsider this decision due to its potential impact on public infrastructure and services.

According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the committee convened at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Moulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, MNA, to evaluate the Ministry of Housing and Works and its departments. The Secretary of the Ministry provided an in-depth briefing, detailing the ministry’s operations, budget allocations for the 2024-25 fiscal year, and issues surrounding federal accommodations and the Pak PWD closure.

The committee advised that a strategic reform or restructuring of the Pak PWD would better serve efficiency and accountability rather than its dissolution, citing possible negative consequences on public works and employees.

The session included participation from various members of the National Assembly, the Minister for Housing and Works, and senior ministry officials. The committee plans to hold another meeting to further discuss the Pak PWD situation.
