Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs meets

Islamabad, August 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):14th meeting of the Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs was held today, in the Parliament House, Islamabad, under the Chairmanship of Mir Amer Ali Khan Magsi, MNA.

At the outset of the meeting, the Committee offered Fateha and extended deep sympathies and condolences with the families, who lost their loved ones in the current floods. The Chair observed that the entire nation is suffering from an extremely difficult time. He urged the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to actively participate in the rescue operations and rehabilitation of flood victims.

The Committee was briefed on total sanctioned strength and recruitment in the PNSC and Port Qasim Authority for the last 5 years with their grades and domiciles. The Committee observed no recruitment of Baluchistan domiciled candidates in PNSC during the last 4 years.

Hon. Muhammad Aslam Bhootani drew the attention of the Chair and Members of the Committee toward the Board of Directors (BOD) of PNSC, where no Member of BOD was placed from Baluchistan. The Chair expressed a displeasure on this violation of quota reserved for Balochistan and directed the ministry of Maritime Affairs to submit a detailed report before the committee in 15 days.

The Committee expressed its displeasure on the differences between the Secretary, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Chairman, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). The Committee directed both the worthy officers to resolve their issues with mutual understanding as soon as possible.

The Secretary, Ministry of Maritime Affairs, updated the Committee on implementation status of the previous recommendations of the Committee. The Committee deferred the discussion on the matter regarding “the problems of fishermen of coastal belt of Karachi due to short term permit and restrictions for fishing in the sea” moved by Syed Agha Rafiullah, MNÄ, for the next meeting of the Committee.

The Committee also deferred the presentation of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) issues of land and briefing on purchasing of ships by the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), for the next meeting of the Committee. The Committee unanimously approved the minutes of its previous meetings held on 7th October, 2021.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Muhammad Aslam Bhootani, Mr. Azhar Qayyum Nahra, Ch. Muhammad Shahbaz Babar, Begum Tahira Bokhari, Ms. Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli, Mr. Kesoo Mal Kheeal Das, Jam Abdul Karim Bijar, Mr. Kamal Uddin, Mr. Usama Qadri, and Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, MNAs. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary and Senior Officers/officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
