Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Law and Justice convened its seventh meeting under the leadership of Ch. Mahmood Bashir Virk, MNA, at Parliament House. The committee, after a session that commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, addressed several legislative matters, ultimately recommending against the passage of multiple bills.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the committee conducted detailed deliberations on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (Article 27), which was moved by Ms. Aliya Kamran, MNA. The majority of the committee members recommended that the bill should not be passed by the assembly. Additionally, the committee deferred the National Accountability (Amendment) Bill, 2024, a government bill, at the request of the ministry.
The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (Article 25) proposed by Dr. Nafisa Shah, MNA, was also deferred for comments from the Ministry of Human Rights. Similarly, bills concerning amendments to Articles 198, 175A, and 215, moved by Mr. Changaze Ahmad Khan and Mr. Asad Qaiser, respectively, were deferred due to the non-availability of the movers.
In further discussions, the committee addressed bills moved by Mr. Noor Alam Khan, MNA, which included amendments to Article 184 and the Contempt of Court (Repeal) Bill, 2024. After thorough deliberations, Mr. Khan opted to withdraw these bills, leading the committee to recommend against their passage. The committee also advised against the adoption of amendments to Articles 51, 59, 106, 177, 193, and 208, also moved by Mr. Khan.
The meeting was attended by several members of the National Assembly, including Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, Ms. Zahra Wadood Fatemi, Mr. Bilal Azhar Kayani, and others, alongside the Minister for Law and Justice and staff from the Ministry of Law and Justice.
