Standing Committee on Interior Recommends Passage of Key Bills, Defers Others

Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Interior convened its 8th meeting at Parliament House, chaired by Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz, MNA. The Committee recommended the passage of “The Naturalization (Amendment) Bill, 2024” and “The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024” to the National Assembly while deferring other significant bills for further consideration.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the Committee reviewed several legislative proposals, including “The Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” “The Pakistan Land Port Authority Bill, 2024,” and “The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” but postponed decisions on these until the next meeting. The session also addressed various administrative concerns, expressing dissatisfaction with international firm hires for Islamabad’s Master Plan and calling for local expertise involvement.

The Committee criticized the imposition of fees on unregistered vehicles and instructed the Ministry of Interior to cancel a related notification and refund collected fees. A one-time fee relaxation and a standardized registration fee structure were also suggested. Additionally, the Committee directed the FIA to strengthen policies on human trafficking and to draft stricter legislative measures against offenders.

Further, the Committee instructed the Circle Registrar of Cooperative Housing Societies to resolve a specific complaint regarding property possession in Islamabad’s Jinnah Garden. The session was attended by numerous Members of the National Assembly and senior Ministry of Interior officials.
