Standing Committee Highlights Urgent Need for Afghan Refugee Policy

Islamabad: The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan, and States and Frontier Regions convened at the Parliament House to examine the performance of the States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) and assess budgetary allocations for local bodies in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Under the leadership of Haji Imtiaz Ahmed Choudhry, MNA, the committee scrutinized key initiatives and administrative developments in the region.

Officials from the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan, and SAFRON provided extensive briefings on subjects including the devolution plan and budgetary allocations for local bodies in AJK. A significant focus was placed on the successful local bodies elections in AJK, which marked a pivotal step in advancing grassroots democracy. The committee noted that PKR 1,600 million has been allocated for AJK in the fiscal year 2024-25 to bolster municipal infrastructure and public services.

The committee engaged in in-depth discussions on the Afghan Management and Repatriation Policy, emphasizing refugee welfare, repatriation, and access to essential services. Concerns were raised about the lack of a comprehensive national policy to effectively manage Afghan refugees, underscoring the need for a coordinated strategy involving federal and international collaboration.

Recommendations were made to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning for the approval of three key projects: Strengthening Institutions for Refugees’ Administration, Housing Community Support Programme, and the establishment of a Mountaineering Institute in Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan.

The meeting saw participation from several notable members and senior officials, highlighting the committee’s commitment to addressing these critical issues.
