Islamabad: The Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research convened for its 20th meeting in the Constitution Room of the Parliament House under the leadership of Syed Tariq Hussain, Member of the National Assembly. The committee addressed crucial issues such as seed supply shortages, the olive sector’s potential, and the rising costs of fertilizers.
After confirming the minutes of the previous meeting, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research informed the committee that only Punjab had taken steps to enforce seed regulations. The committee urged other provinces to respond within 15 days to ensure quality seed availability. A severe seed shortage was highlighted, particularly in Balochistan, prompting the committee to direct a resolution meeting between provincial secretaries.
The committee reviewed the stalled progress on a joint research center at Khairpur and decided to form a sub-committee to expedite the project. It also recommended implementing minimum support prices for sugarcane and other crops to protect farmers, while addressing the challenges faced in the wheat and tobacco sectors.
In the olive sector, Pakistan’s higher yield rate positions it advantageously in the global market. The government has launched initiatives to improve crop productivity and quality, yet challenges such as limited infrastructure and farmer training persist. The committee recommended updates and investments to enhance competitiveness.
Concerns over rising fertilizer costs were expressed, and the government has scheduled a meeting to explore ways to reduce prices. Irregular transfers within PARC were also addressed, with the Ministry promising a review and corrective action.
The meeting was attended by committee members and senior officials from various relevant departments.
