Srinagar, The sealing of bank accounts of a mosque in Srinagar by the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sparked forceful anti-India protests in the city.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the action targeted the accounts of a mosque named after the prominent Sufi cleric Khwaja Habibullah Nowshahri in the Nowshehra area. This has led to significant unrest among the local population. Protesters claim that the authorities have unjustly accused the mosque of misappropriating funds, an allegation they vehemently deny.
The demonstrators assert that this interference in religious affairs has escalated since the Bharatiya Janata Party assumed control of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board. They have repeatedly demanded evidence to support the accusations but claim that the authorities have not provided any satisfactory proof.
Furthermore, the protesters view the freezing of the mosque’s accounts as part of a broader strategy to seize control of the mosque and an adjacent khanqah, a place of spiritual retreat and religious gathering.
This incident has heightened tensions in the region, reflecting deeper issues of governance and religious freedom under the current administration.
