Srinagar: A large Muharram procession in Srinagar, within Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, prominently displayed solidarity with Palestinians, as participants defied local prohibitions by raising Palestinian flags and vocalizing anti-Israel sentiments.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the authorities in IIOJK have enforced a strict ban on pro-Palestinian demonstrations following recent hostilities in Gaza, which included multiple closures of the historic Jamia Masjid to stifle expressions of support for Palestine. Despite these restrictions, the 8th Muharram procession, starting from Guru Bazar and concluding at Dalgate, saw significant participation with mourners brandishing Palestinian flags and adorning badges that showcased the Palestinian emblem.
Participants of the procession, like Ali Saffudin, drew parallels between historical and current events, citing religious teachings as a foundation for their support of Palestine. “Karbala teaches us to stand up for truth and against oppression,” Saffudin remarked, drawing a comparison between the struggles of Gaza and the historical events of Karbala.
The sentiment was echoed by Aamir Ali, another mourner, who highlighted the severe humanitarian issues in Gaza as a catalyst for breaking their silence. The calls for solidarity were reinforced by Aga Syed Muhammad Hadi, a prominent Shia cleric, who urged the community to use Muharram gatherings as platforms for expressing unity with those suffering globally.
The resumption of the main Muharram processions, which had been banned for decades due to fears of anti-India demonstrations, comes with stringent stipulations designed to prevent any anti-India or pro-Palestinian political expressions during these religious observances.
