SRINAGAR, The State Investigation Agency (SIA), operating under New Delhi’s authority, has filed a chargesheet against two Kashmiri individuals who are currently detained. The charges have been presented in a court in Srinagar, alleging the individuals’ involvement in a fabricated case.
According to Kashmir media service, the SIA has accused Danish Ahmad Koul and Faizan Ishtiyaq Kharadi, both from Srinagar, of sourcing funds from Saudi Arabia and Muscat Oman to support the Kashmiri freedom movement. The charges were brought under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a law that has been widely criticized for its harsh provisions and the broad authority it grants to law enforcement agencies.
Furthermore, the SIA had previously submitted a chargesheet in the same case against another Kashmiri youth, Hamaad Farooq Tramboo, who is also being held. Indian police have classified Tramboo as an over-ground worker for mujahid organizations, a label they are using to legitimize his detention without trial.
This case brings to light the continued use of the UAPA in Kashmir, which activists and international human rights organizations have condemned as a tool for suppressing dissent and political opposition in the region.
