Srinagar, Political experts and analysts in Srinagar have asserted that Jammu and Kashmir (JandK) is an internationally-recognized disputed territory, not merely an internal matter of India. Their statements come in the context of ongoing debates over the region’s status on the United Nations Security Council’s agenda for over seven decades.
According to Kashmir Media Service, these political experts and analysts, through their interviews and statements, emphasized that the Indian Supreme Court’s verdict does not alter New Delhi’s status as an occupier in Jammu and Kashmir. They argue that the Indian judiciary has historically served to endorse India’s unlawful occupation of the region. They further insisted that the apex court in India lacks the authority to determine the legal status of Jammu and Kashmir, given its recognition as a disputed territory at the international level.
The experts and analysts criticized the Modi government’s actions since August 5, 2019, including subsequent measures, as a flagrant violation of United Nations resolutions. They expressed concern over India’s apparent disregard for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination in accordance with these resolutions, accusing the Indian government of employing deceptive tactics to shift global attention away from human rights abuses committed by its forces in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Furthermore, these experts underscored that the denial of the right to self-determination to Kashmiris is the core issue fueling the ongoing dispute over Kashmir. They stressed that the resolution of this dispute lies in adhering to UN resolutions, which advocate for a plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations.
In their concluding remarks, the political experts and analysts highlighted the role of international community’s silence in emboldening India’s assertive actions in South Asia. They called upon the United Nations to actively uphold its responsibilities concerning the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
