Srinagar: More than 25,000 individuals have been registered as drug addicts in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) since 2022, highlighting a growing concern in the region. Health officials confirmed the figures in response to inquiries from several Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
The Health and Medical Education Department reported that outpatient department (OPD) registrations for drug abuse reached 9,775 in 2022, 8,700 in 2023, and 6,925 in 2024. Inpatient department (IPD) registrations included 306 cases in 2022, 586 in 2023, and 703 in 2024.
The department acknowledged the seriousness of the drug issue, recognizing it as a pressing concern that requires coordinated efforts for eradication. A representative from the department pointed out the responsibility of law enforcement agencies under New Delhi’s jurisdiction in implementing strict measures to address the crisis.
Despite the rising numbers, there is currently no specialized rehabilitation center for women in the region. However, treatment and support services are available for both men and women struggling with drug addiction.
Experts in the region have identified frequent raids and arbitrary arrests as contributing factors to the increase in drug abuse cases.
