Special Committee Urges Action on Gender Equality Amid Global Ranking Concerns

Islamabad: The National Assembly Special Committee on Gender Mainstreaming, led by Dr. Nafisa Shah, raised alarms over Pakistan’s position at 148 in the Global Gender Gap Index Report 2025. The committee highlighted the need for urgent policy changes to address gender disparities in the country.

The committee noted that the low ranking is partly due to issues in data collection and reporting. They emphasized that reforms are necessary to make significant progress towards gender equality.

Concerns were also expressed regarding the lack of implementation of the committee’s past recommendations. The committee suggested that the Federal Government establish a Cabinet Committee on Gender Mainstreaming to ensure political support for women’s rights at the federal level.

Additionally, the committee called for the inclusion of women parliamentarians in budgetary and developmental processes, aiming to enhance their role and influence in governance and policy-making.
