Speakers Call for UN Intervention on Kashmir Dispute

Islamabad: A seminar organized by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) in Islamabad highlighted calls for United Nations intervention in the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Masood Ahmed Khan, alongside Gilgit-Baltistan Spokesperson Faizullah Firaq and former convener of the APHC-AJK, Muhammad Farooq Rahmani, addressed attendees, emphasizing the significance of the United Nations resolution passed on January 5, 1949, which recognizes the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

Speakers at the seminar underscored the ongoing sacrifices made by Kashmiris in their pursuit of self-determination and criticized India’s inability to quell the freedom movement. They urged India to acknowledge the situation on the ground and foster conditions conducive to a peaceful resolution.

The seminar participants appealed to the United Nations and international human rights organizations to implement UN resolutions on Kashmir and address the human rights violations in the region. They stressed that resolving the Kashmir issue is vital for achieving lasting peace in South Asia and criticized India’s actions on August 5, 2019, that revoked the region’s special status.

During the event, special prayers were held for those who have lost their lives in the conflict. Leaders from the APHC-AJK, including Mahmood Ahmed Saghar, Altaf Hussain Wani, and others, were present.

Senior APHC-AJK leader Muhammad Farooq Rahmani issued a statement urging world leaders and the UN Secretary-General to enforce the relevant resolutions for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. He attributed the prolonged failure to address the issue as a source of regional tension and called on India to cooperate with the UN to resolve the conflict permanently.
