ISLAMABAD: In a recent development, Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, expressed approval of the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s (PCA) decision affirming the validity of the Indus Waters Treaty. The ruling stated that India does not possess the right to unilaterally suspend or terminate the treaty.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Sadiq emphasized that the decision highlights the importance of adhering to international law and treaty commitments. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to international treaties and peaceful dispute resolution, underscoring the necessity for dialogue.

The Indus Waters Treaty, which Sadiq described as crucial for regional stability and prosperity, must be respected in both letter and spirit. He criticized India’s actions as inconsistent with the treaty and international law, noting that the PCA’s ruling exposed the lack of legal basis for India’s position.

Sadiq further condemned India’s actions as “water terrorism,” warning of potential humanitarian and economic consequences. He urged India to comply with its treaty obligations, particularly regarding the Ratle Hydroelectric Plant, and expressed hope for adherence to the PCA’s decision.
