Lahore: A delegation from the Spanish Senate engaged in a productive meeting with Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral relations, trade, and tourism between Spain and Punjab. The talks emphasized Spain’s position as Pakistan’s second-largest export partner within the European Union and discussed strategies to capitalize on this relationship.
According to Chief Minister of Punjab, the meeting with the Spanish senators delved into potential agreements to bolster cooperation across various sectors, including the economy, climate change, disaster risk management, and environmental pollution. Chief Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for Spain’s support in securing the GSP Plus status and underscored the importance of fostering friendly ties with the European nation.
The discussions also touched upon collaborative efforts in developing early warning systems and enhancing rescue services to mitigate flood damage, as well as promoting parliamentary diplomacy. Chief Minister Sharif highlighted Punjab’s aspirations to become a tourist hub and invited Spanish investment in the sector, noting the preparation of a special package aimed at facilitating foreign investors.
In addressing the importance of women empowerment, Chief Minister Sharif pointed out the significant rise in the number of female parliamentarians. She also conveyed her condolences for the losses incurred during the recent floods in Valencia, Spain, and offered assistance for relief and rehabilitation efforts while commending Spain’s support in Pakistan’s flood response plan.
The Spanish delegation acknowledged the significance of having a woman in the role of Chief Minister and praised Sharif’s effective management of provincial affairs. They also referenced the symbolic tribute to Allama Iqbal in Cordoba, Spain, during the meeting.
