Soccer World Cup: Iran Seal WC Qualification As Taremi Double Earns Draw

Tehran: Iran secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup after a resolute performance by Mehdi Taremi led to a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in a crucial qualifier held at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium. The result ensures Iran’s place in the tournament set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Iran required just a point to join Japan as one of the Asian nations qualified for the finals. The match saw Uzbekistan take the lead twice, but Taremi, the Inter Milan striker, was instrumental in leveling the score both times.

Uzbekistan initially took advantage with a quick response, as Abbosbek Fayzullaev’s free kick from the left slipped past three Iranian defenders. However, Taremi equalized in the second half, securing Iran’s qualification.

With seven minutes remaining, Taremi capitalized on a bouncing ball in the six-yard box, stretching out to score and ensure Iran’s advancement. This draw guarantees Iran one of the two automatic spots from Group A, as the team now holds 20 points from eight games, ten points ahead of the third-placed UAE, who are scheduled to play against North Korea.

Uzbekistan remains in second place with 17 points, continuing their quest for qualification.
