Sindh Ramps Up Efforts to Combat Heatwave with Stabilization Camps and Public Awareness Initiatives

Sindh: As the heatwave of 2024 continues to challenge the region, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Sindh has intensified its response efforts. The authority, along with District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), is actively monitoring and addressing the heatwave’s impacts through the establishment of heat stabilization camps and widespread public awareness campaigns.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the response period from May 21 to July 24 has seen significant coordination efforts among various emergency operation centers and humanitarian partners. A total of 294 heat stabilization camps have been established across various districts with the support of 40 humanitarian partners. These camps are crucial for providing immediate relief to heatwave victims and for preventing heatstroke-related health issues.

The PDMA has also implemented a comprehensive awareness program, which includes the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, and the utilization of banners and media content across print, electronic, and social platforms to educate the public about the dangers of heatwaves.

Moreover, Deputy Commissioners and Chairs of DDMAs have been actively involved in visiting these camps to ensure proper operations and to engage in direct oversight of the services provided. In addition to these efforts, a plantation drive has been initiated in some districts to promote greener environments that can help mitigate the heat.

The continued support for safe transportation and shifting of patients from camps to specialized heat stroke centers and hospitals highlights the proactive measures being taken by local authorities to safeguard the health of the population during this critical time.
