Karachi: In a significant development, the Sindh Police have announced plans to implement electronic monitoring of habitual offenders, as discussed in a recent meeting at the Central Police Office in Karachi. The meeting, chaired by Inspector General of Police Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, focused on the monitoring measures under the Sindh Addicted Suspects Monitoring Act 2022.
According to Sindh Police, the meeting included detailed briefings by senior police officials, including DIGs from various branches such as Crime and Investigations, and IT. The discussions highlighted that in the first phase, 4,000 habitual offenders will be monitored using electronic tagging devices. The acquisition of these devices is set to commence with an advertisement for their purchase being released on November 11. The monitoring process will initiate at the police station level, before expanding to divisions, zones, and Central Police Offices.
IG Sindh emphasized the importance of identifying and maintaining data on habitual offenders, with a directive for all SSPs, SPs, and investigation officers to ensure comprehensive data compilation. Furthermore, he stressed the need for a centralized system for registering the identity cards of offenders, along with the installation, use, and monitoring of the electronic devices. Training and awareness courses for police officers regarding the use of these monitoring devices are to be arranged, with an aim to reduce the burden on the prison system through effective monitoring practices.
