Karachi: The Sindh Police, under the leadership of IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, is making significant strides in enhancing policing effectiveness and public trust through the use of body-worn cameras. This initiative was detailed in a recent review meeting held at the Central Police Office in Karachi, where senior police officials discussed the use, functionality, and benefits of the technology.
According to Sindh Police, the meeting featured presentations by DIG IT and Traffic, who outlined the positive impact of the 800 body-worn cameras currently deployed among traffic and operational police units. DIG Traffic highlighted how these cameras have been instrumental in streamlining challan ticketing processes and improving interactions between police officers and citizens.
The cameras are primarily used by 500 traffic police officers and 300 operational police personnel, providing critical support in day-to-day operations. They record all traffic challans and are used during various police enforcement campaigns. Before issuing a challan, officers inform citizens that they are being recorded, which has significantly reduced the number of complaints from the public regarding traffic police conduct.
IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon emphasized the importance of technology in modern policing, stating that it is crucial for ensuring disciplined, transparent, and community-friendly policing. He also mentioned plans to expand the use of body-worn cameras among Karachi Traffic Police and to introduce smart traffic challaning cameras across the city.
The smart cameras, set to be installed at 30 key locations in the first phase, will automate the challaning process by sending tickets directly to violators’ homes, further enhancing the efficiency of traffic rule enforcement in Karachi.
This initiative represents a major step forward in the Sindh Police’s efforts to modernize its operations and improve its service to the community, ensuring a safer and more peaceful society.
