Sindh Ombudsman Launches Climate and Disaster Justice Unit in Karachi

Karachi: In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing justice and accountability in disaster-prone regions, the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh, Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput, has announced the establishment of the Climate and Disaster Justice Unit (CDJU). The unit will operate from the Ombudsman’s Secretariat and is intended to serve as a fast-track forum for addressing complaints related to disaster preparedness, response, and rehabilitation.

Mr. Imdad Hussain Siddiqui, who has substantial experience in coordination and disaster risk governance, has been appointed as the Director of the CDJU. The unit will focus on ensuring that affected individuals and communities receive due compensation and access to basic amenities during crises. It also aims to protect fundamental rights during both natural and human-made disasters.

Beyond addressing grievances, the CDJU seeks to build partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs, humanitarian organizations, and community-based groups to improve outreach and transparency. It will collaborate with government departments to ensure adherence to Sindh’s disaster and climate policies. Through its efforts in research, advocacy, and capacity building, the unit aims to strengthen disaster governance.

This move highlights the Ombudsman Sindh’s commitment to institutional reforms and delivering prompt and free administrative justice to the most vulnerable segments of society.
