Sindh Heatwave Response: PDMA Coordinates Extensive Relief Efforts

Karachi: Amid an ongoing heatwave, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has intensified its response efforts across the region from May 21 to July 8, 2024. The authority, in conjunction with District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) and numerous humanitarian partners, has been actively establishing heat stabilization camps to combat the severe temperatures affecting the province.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, the Provincial Emergency Operation Centre is working in close collaboration with all district-level emergency operation centers and humanitarian partners to monitor the heatwave situation. To date, 294 heat stabilization camps have been established, providing relief and critical information to the affected populations. These camps are supported by 40 humanitarian partners who have also engaged in widespread community education and awareness campaigns about the dangers of heatwaves. This includes the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and conducting sessions on heatwave impacts.

Local authorities, including Deputy Commissioners and Chairs of DDMAs, have been conducting regular visits to these camps to ensure proper management and support. Additionally, these officials have initiated a plantation drive in several districts to promote environmental sustainability and reduce heat absorption in urban areas.
