Sindh Government’s Vehicle Allocation for Assistant Commissioners: A Necessary Update

Karachi: Amidst media scrutiny, the Sindh government has defended its decision to allocate Rs2 billion for the purchase of 138 double-cabin vehicles for Assistant Commissioners, citing the critical need for reliable transportation to enhance administrative efficiency across the province.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the allocation is part of a broader initiative to replace outdated vehicles, some of which have been in use since 2005 and have covered nearly 0.8 million kilometers. The decision targets the essential requirements of Assistant Commissioners who play a pivotal role in various administrative duties including law enforcement, disaster management, and public service delivery. The government emphasizes that these are not luxury vehicles but necessary operational tools required for effective governance.

The purchase aims to reduce substantial funds previously spent on maintenance of old vehicles while also addressing the challenges faced by officers who currently rely on personal or hired vehicles for official duties. The initiative also includes condemning unroadworthy vehicles and recovering government vehicles in unauthorized possession, with over 50 percent already retrieved and reassigned. This strategy mirrors actions taken by other provincial governments, reflecting a national acknowledgment of the need for dependable transportation for administrative officers to ensure prompt and effective responses to public needs.
