Sindh Government Aims to Exempt 300-Unit Electricity Consumers from Solar Tax

Karachi: Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, announced the government’s ongoing efforts to exempt electricity consumers using up to 300 units from the solar tax. Speaking at the National Environmental Sustainability Conference and Awards Ceremony, organized by the Youth Parliament in Karachi, Shah detailed the province’s active engagement with the federal government on this initiative.

During the event, Shah highlighted Sindh’s commitment to green energy, noting the province’s abundant wind and solar resources. He emphasized that the Sindh Energy Department is distributing solar panels to underprivileged households in remote areas, aligning with the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and directives from the Chief Minister of Sindh.

Sindh has also achieved significant environmental milestones, such as receiving foreign carbon credits due to mangrove plantations along its coastal belts. This initiative, supported by international organizations, has set a Guinness World Record for planting one million mangroves in a single day.

Addressing the youth at the conference, Shah expressed optimism about their role in the province’s future. He acknowledged constitutional and legal barriers hindering legislative progress for youth initiatives but reiterated the government’s commitment to overcoming these challenges.

Shah dismissed claims that Karachi is unlivable, citing continued migration to the city as evidence of its vibrancy. He underscored the Sindh Government’s focus on improving infrastructure and treatment plants in Karachi.

Despite grievances over receiving only 2% to 3% of federal allocations since 2013, Shah announced plans to introduce electric scooters for working women, following the rollout of electric buses. The initiative includes training and issuing driving licenses to women.

The event concluded with Shah distributing awards, recognizing the efforts of participants in promoting environmental sustainability.
