Karachi: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has intensified its efforts to manage the ongoing heatwave through the establishment of additional stabilization camps and the initiation of plantation drives across various districts, as part of a broader strategy to mitigate heat-related risks.
According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority, from May 21 to July 14, 2024, the PDMA and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) have been actively monitoring the heatwave situation. In collaboration with 40 humanitarian partners, they have set up 294 heat stabilization camps, providing critical support and education on heatwave impacts. These camps serve as vital points for the safe transportation and shifting of patients to Heat Stroke Centers and hospitals.
The response plan includes extensive awareness campaigns using Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, banners, and media content that has been thoroughly vetted by PDMA. These efforts are complemented by regular visits to the camps by Deputy Commissioners and Chairmen of DDMAs, ensuring effective oversight and coordination.
Moreover, some districts have started plantation drives, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioners and DDMAs, to enhance green cover and reduce ambient temperatures, thereby contributing to long-term climate resilience.
