Sindh Energy Minister Assures No Federal Tax on Solar Power

Karachi, Sindh’s Minister for Energy, Development and Planning Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has assured that the federal government will not impose a tax on solar power, addressing concerns from the Sindh government. Minister Shah emphasized the importance of solar energy as a relief for consumers burdened by high electricity costs and inflation during a session in the Sindh Assembly.

According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Sindh, Minister Shah discussed several pressing issues related to the energy sector, including unannounced load-shedding and excessive electricity billing, which he plans to address with executives from K Electric, Hesco, and Sepco. He criticized the practice of cutting off entire feeders due to the non-payment by a few, suggesting that only the defaulters should face power cuts. The minister also noted the failure to provide smart meters despite payments and mentioned ongoing efforts to counter electricity theft and ensure continuous power supply during the upcoming heatwave from May 22 to 27.

Minister Shah highlighted the steps taken by the Sindh government to enhance solar energy usage across the province. He mentioned plans to equip two lakh houses in five districts with solar systems, offering free electricity to consumers using up to 300 units. “This facility is being given to users up to 100 units and the scope of this facility will be extended from ten districts to the entire province,” he stated, outlining the ambitious solarization of public buildings, including schools and hospitals, in Karachi and Hyderabad.

The session also touched on broader energy initiatives, such as the development of solar parks and the provision of 100 MW of cheap electricity to the National Grid through Nooriabad Power Plants. Minister Shah celebrated the success of TharCoal, which has been pivotal in supplying affordable electricity to the National Grid and attracting foreign investment.
