Sindh CM Allocates Rs 400 Million to Aid Persons with Disabilities

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced a significant financial initiative, distributing Rs 400 million to 56 partner organizations dedicated to supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs). This move underscores the provincial government’s efforts toward creating a more inclusive society.

At an event organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) at the Chief Minister’s office, Shah highlighted the importance of sustainable partnerships, assistive technologies, inclusive education, and equitable employment opportunities for PWDs. He emphasized these as key priorities for his administration.

The gathering was attended by several provincial ministers, special assistants, and representatives from disability rights organizations. The Chief Minister handed out cheques to the partner organizations, with the funds already transferred to their accounts. Shah noted that assistive technologies, such as wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs, symbolize independence and opportunity for PWDs.

The event featured performances by special children, including a tribute to the Pakistan Armed Forces, and showcased their artwork, which included portraits of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the Chief Minister. These artworks were presented as gifts to Shah.

During the event, Shah announced an increase in the DEPD’s budget to Rs 800 million for the next fiscal year. He also revealed the establishment of 20 new centers for PWDs in collaboration with NGOs and the enhancement of 15 existing centers’ capacities. Transportation support for 66 centers has been improved, and 12 autism centers are scheduled to become operational by year-end.

The Chief Minister also discussed plans for the Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Training Services (CRTS) Center in Larkana, which is set to open this year. A new CRTS Center will be established in Mirpurkhas as directed by President Asif Zardari. Additionally, a separate directorate for inclusive education has been created to integrate children with disabilities into mainstream schools.

The event was dedicated to the memory of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, with Shah expressing her sacrifice for democracy. He also mandated wheelchair accessibility for all government buildings, stating that the CM House is now fully accessible.

Shah acknowledged the progress made while recognizing that more work is needed. He credited partner organizations for their essential role and stressed the importance of their ongoing collaboration to achieve lasting societal change.
