Sindh Chief Minister Orders Acceleration of K-IV Water Supply Project, Emphasizes Reforms

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed officials to expedite work on critical water infrastructure projects in Karachi, highlighting the importance of the K-IV Water Supply Project’s timely completion and other reforms under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) to address the city’s growing water and sanitation requirements.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the directive was issued during a review meeting at the CM House, where the chief minister underscored the provincial government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s water supply system. “Karachi’s expanding population requires a modern and efficient water supply system. We must ensure that all ongoing projects are completed on time and with the highest quality standards,” Shah stated. The meeting included key provincial ministers and officials involved in the project.

The chief minister was briefed on the intensified efforts regarding the K-IV pipeline, especially along the challenging 2.7-kilometer shared corridor with the Karachi BRT Red Line Project. Project teams are now working towards installing two major pipelines daily to ensure the project’s timely completion. Shah instructed that construction in densely populated areas with existing utility lines be managed carefully, utilizing modern excavation techniques to avoid damage to public infrastructure.

The meeting also covered progress on Phase-I of KWSSIP, with significant components nearing completion. A Customer Service Centre is already operational, and additional centers are in the final stages of construction. The development of the Centre of Reform, Research and Innovation (CERRI) building and parking sheds for service vehicles continues. Progress on the Dhabeji Rising Main and the rehabilitation of the Dhabeji Pumping Station was also noted.

As part of institutional reforms, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has launched a digital platform for customer services, allowing citizens to manage billing, lodge complaints, and book water tankers online in multiple languages. Additionally, KWSSIP is extending services to underserved communities through community-based initiatives, connecting areas like Soba Nagar and Essa Nagri to improved networks.

The meeting reviewed preparations for Phase-II of KWSSIP, which aims to expand investments in water infrastructure and reforms, supported by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Chief Minister Shah emphasized sustained momentum and coordination across departments to ensure the project’s successful implementation, stating, “The success of KWSSIP will transform Karachi’s water supply and sanitation system.”
