Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has firmly ruled out the division of Sindh without a constitutional mandate while showcasing the Thar mining success at the National Mining Conference. He emphasized that the Sindh Assembly has consistently opposed the creation of new provinces and called for the adoption of the ‘Thar model’ of mining and community development across Pakistan.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, the Constitution of Pakistan clearly outlines the procedure for creating new provinces, requiring a two-thirds majority resolution from the concerned provincial assembly. Speaking at the Mining Technical Conference 2026 in Karachi, organized by Sindh Engro Mining Company, Shah reiterated that without a constitutional change, Sindh cannot be divided into more provinces. He expressed confidence in the Pakistan Peoples Party’s commitment to protecting Sindh’s interests.

Addressing the conference, the chief minister highlighted Thar’s transformation from a drought-prone region into a major energy and mining hub, advocating for the replication of this model nationwide. He noted the success of public-private partnerships in Thar, which has led to significant coal production and electricity generation, reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuels and saving $1.5 billion annually in foreign exchange.

Murad Shah urged investment in human resource development to ensure the future of mining, emphasizing the need for collaboration between industry, academia, and technology providers. He also highlighted the Sindh government’s role as a regulator and development partner in major mining projects, stressing the importance of responsible resource development and community welfare.

In addition to discussing mining developments, Shah addressed political matters, criticizing recent protests in Karachi that disrupted traffic. He called for proper coordination between protest organizers and the administration to avoid public inconvenience. On food security, he detailed the government’s wheat procurement efforts, highlighting measures to stabilize flour prices in the province.

Concluding his address, the chief minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating investment and innovation in the mining sector, aiming to transform Pakistan’s mineral resources into long-term prosperity.
