Sindh Chief Minister Launches Austerity Measures to Boost Development Budget

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has initiated budget meetings to finalize development proposals for the upcoming financial year. In a notable move, Shah announced an austerity drive aimed at conserving funds for development initiatives.

Two separate meetings were convened at CM House, attended by key officials including Minister P and D Nasir Shah and Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah. The discussions centered on finalizing the Annual Development Programme (ADP) with a focus on rehabilitating flood-damaged infrastructure.

The Planning and Development Department was directed to prioritize canal and watercourse lining projects in the new development schemes. Shah emphasized the need for projects that enhance agricultural output and productivity, signaling a renewed focus on the agricultural sector.

The government reiterated its commitment to the health sector, aiming to improve healthcare facilities across Sindh. In education, upgrading primary schools to the elementary level was highlighted, alongside proposed initiatives for both formal and non-formal education systems.

The Chief Minister also called for new schemes in technical and higher education and advocated for projects that encourage sports and healthy activities for youth. These plans mark a strategic direction for the next fiscal year, emphasizing infrastructure rebuilding, agricultural growth, and youth development.

In the Finance Department meeting, Shah stressed the importance of reducing non-development expenditures while increasing development project allocations. He expressed confidence that provincial tax collection agencies would meet their targets.

Key projects earmarked for accelerated funding include the K-IV water supply project and the Shahrah-e-Bhutto expressway. The expressway, spanning 38.75 kilometers, is expected to enhance urban connectivity and reduce congestion in Karachi.

Shah also highlighted the need for new schemes to expand the ADP while maintaining fiscal prudence. He advocated cost-saving measures to ensure that savings are redirected towards development activities.

These meetings lay the groundwork for Sindh’s budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, reflecting a commitment to balanced fiscal management and strategic investment in public services.
