Sheer embarrassment to India: Interpol rejects its red corner notice against Khalistan leader

New Delhi, October 12, 2022 (PPI-OT):In a sheer embarrassment to India, the International Criminal Police Organisation, commonly known as Interpol, has rejected its request to issue a Red Corner Notice against Khalistan leader, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The Interpol rejected India’s request to issue a Red Corner Notice against Pannun on terror charges. It said that Indian authorities failed to provide sufficient information to support their case, the Indian Express reported.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is the Canada-based founder and legal advisor of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) – a US-based organization spearheading the struggle for independence of Punjab from India and declaring it Khalistan, a separate homeland for Sikhs. India had declared the SFJ an unlawful organization in 2019.

The Indian Express quoting sources reported that instead of paying heed to India’s request, the Interpol raised concerns over the “misuse” of Unlawful draconian law, Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) to target minority groups and rights activists by the Indian government without “respecting” their right to due process and a fair trial. The Interpol said that Pannun’s activities have a “clear political dimension” and therefore, it cannot issue a Red Corner Notice according to its constitution. As per the newspaper’s report, India’s National Central Bureau (NCB), on behalf of the National Investigation Agency, had requested for the Red Corner Notice against Pannun on May 21,
