Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Advances Judicial Cooperation in Tashkent Meeting

Islamabad, The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held its 19th meeting of the Heads of Judiciary in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from May 22 to 24, 2024. This pivotal gathering, attended by judicial leaders from nine member states, focused on key issues such as human trafficking, mediation in civil cases, property rights, administrative justice, and the integration of digital technologies in judicial processes.

According to Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa represented Pakistan, marking his second attendance at an SCO meeting. The session was notable for its thematic diversity and the signing of a joint statement that reinforced the commitment of the judiciaries to enhance cooperation. The meeting underscored the SCO’s role in addressing legal challenges faced by nearly half of the world’s population residing in its member states.

The meeting also highlighted the cultural exchanges within the SCO framework, as exemplified by the gift presented to Chief Justice Isa a watch encased in a replica of Uzbekistan’s ‘Monument of Independence.’ This artifact, symbolizing the legendary Simurgh bird, was requested to be displayed permanently in the Supreme Court Museum of Pakistan, reflecting the deep cultural and judicial ties fostered through the SCO.
