Several children die of “mystery fever” in India

Srinagar, September 15, 2021 (PPI-OT):A “mystery fever” has killed at least twelve children in Chilli, a small village in Palwal district of the Indian state of Haryana. At least 44 other people, 35 of whom are minors, have reported fever-like symptoms and are admitted to private hospitals. The Health Department teams were rushed to Chilli village near Hathin city of Palwal district after several children fell ill and deaths were reported due to high fever.

Dr Vijay Kumar, Senior Medical Officer, Hathin, said that the efforts to contain the spread of fever are in full swing. “We got news of some cases of fever and deaths while testing for COVID-19, Dengue, and Malaria has been started. We are also testing for other causes of fever. We have taken samples of 80 people who are having fever. No malaria cases have been reported. 4-5 children have died due to dengue and several children are ill,” Dr Kumar said.

Though the actual cause of fever has not been confirmed by the health department yet, the prevalence of fever over the last few days in the village has caused fear within the residents of the village and some parents have lost their children. The Firozabad city in Uttar Pradesh state has been battling an outbreak of dengue and deadly viral fever for the past three weeks now, with most of the victims being children.

Meanwhile, in another Indian state West Bengal’s Siliguri town, scores of babies are suffering from fever and respiratory problems. “About 70 babies have been admitted in pediatric of the Siliguri District Hospital. Most of them are below the age of 5 months,” Dr Subir Bhowmick, Pediatrician, Siliguri Dist Hospital said.
