GENEVA: Senator Samina Zehri, Chairperson of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, delivered a compelling address at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva. Speaking at the Forum of Women Parliamentarians’ panel discussion, she emphasized the need to transform leadership into a force for purpose and dignity.
Representing the Senate of Pakistan and Balochistan, Senator Zehri highlighted the resilience of marginalized communities and the pivotal role of women in shaping the future. She underscored that every achievement by a woman from her province is a historic milestone.
Senator Zehri detailed legislative efforts under her leadership, focusing on reforms in mental health, gender-based violence protections, and digital safety laws. She stressed that justice should aim to heal, not just punish.
Emphasizing bipartisan collaboration and grassroots advocacy, she noted the importance of engaging men as partners in change. Her experiences during the 2022 floods in Balochistan, she said, reaffirmed her belief in leadership as a service rooted in compassion and accountability.
Additionally, Senator Zehri highlighted her involvement with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, emphasizing Pakistan’s active participation in global human rights discussions.
Her speech concluded with a call for women leaders worldwide to lead with purpose and empathy, striving for a world where courage, not gender, defines destiny.
