Senator Saifullah Abro Advocates for Enhanced APA Effectiveness at Tehran Working Group

Islamabad, July 12, 2023 (PPI-OT): Senator Saifullah Abro addressed the APA Working Group on Statutory Document in Tehran, Iran. The Senator emphasized the need to strengthen the institutional capacity of the APA to address pressing global issues and promote Asian integration. In his address, Senator Saifullah Abro acknowledged the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, commending the resolve of APA Members in navigating these crises. He highlighted the role of Parliaments as peace builders and proposed building synergies between the APA and other governmental organizations.

The Senator stressed the importance of increased access to information and accountability in implementing APA objectives through national legislation and public policy. He also called for the establishment of an Asian Parliament as the institutional voice for Asia, emphasizing the need for financial sustainability and adoption of best practices. Senator Saifullah Abro expressed full support for APA reforms and encouraged fruitful discussions among participants to make the APA the influential voice of Asia.

Previously Senator Saifullah Abro had delivered a speech at the APA Standing Committee on Budget and Planning meeting in Tehran, advocating for international legislation to criminalize the desecration of holy symbols and stressing the need for a sustainable funding mechanism for the APA. He strongly condemned the recent desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden, calling for a collective strategy within the APA to promote interfaith harmony and prevent xenophobia and Islamophobia. Senator Abro also expressed concern over the lack of consensus and progress in the funding of the APA, proposing an effective and structured funding mechanism based on equality and economic considerations, and suggesting the engagement of experts to formulate a comprehensive funding plan for approval at the next plenary session, with the hope of establishing a sustainable mechanism for APA budgeting and funding.
