Islamabad: Senator Anusha Rehman, representing Pakistan, has made a compelling case for equitable artificial intelligence (AI) governance at the historic launch of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance under the United Nations’ auspices. The Senator’s speech highlighted the urgent need for a global framework that bridges knowledge and capacity gaps, especially for developing nations.
In her remarks, Senator Rehman emphasized that the Dialogue should act as a practical tool offering tailored policy advice, training, and open access resources. She advocated for a comprehensive global framework ensuring AI systems are safe, secure, and trustworthy, aligning with international human rights laws and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Senator proposed the promotion of equity in AI innovation by facilitating technology transfers and ensuring affordable access to infrastructure. She underscored the necessity of making quality datasets and critical data accessible to developing countries and called for a United Nations Artificial Intelligence Fund to secure sustainable financing and capacity-building.
Senator Rehman also stressed the importance of equitable representation of developing nations in the Dialogue and related panels to reflect regional realities in outcomes. She highlighted the need to protect citizens, particularly vulnerable groups like children, youth, and the elderly, by safeguarding privacy and personal freedoms, raising awareness about deepfakes and misinformation, and tackling issues of bias and data misuse.
Highlighting Pakistan’s advancements, Senator Rehman mentioned the adoption of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy 2025, which serves as a roadmap for inclusive and sustainable AI growth. This policy focuses on investing in human capital and infrastructure while strengthening regulations to protect personal data and ensure the safe adaptation of AI technologies.
“Artificial Intelligence must become a driver of common public good and shared prosperity,” Senator Rehman affirmed, pledging Pakistan’s continued constructive collaboration with the United Nations and global partners to achieve responsible and equitable AI governance.
