Islamabad: A Senate Sub-Committee convened by Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan met at Parliament House to examine allegations against the Acting Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Azam University, Professor Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal. The session focused on derogatory remarks made by Jaspal regarding Senators’ concerns about hostel evictions and illegal activities at the university.
Senator Dost Ali Jeesar, Senator Saadia Abbasi, and Senator Jan Muhammad attended the meeting. The committee was briefed by the Police Special Branch on the law and order situation at the university. A First Information Report, registered in July, led to the arrest of 43 individuals, involving current students, alumni, and illegal occupants.
During police operations, weapons were recovered, and detainees were sent to judicial custody. The police also reported seven narcotics-related cases in the vicinity, resulting in the seizure of significant quantities of drugs.
Professor Jaspal informed the committee about ethnic student councils disrupting university activities. He emphasized the need for hostels to accommodate enrolled students only.
Senator Khan expressed concern over the negative impact on the university’s reputation. Senator Abbasi highlighted the need for better administrative control.
The Sub-Committee directed police officials to provide a detailed report in the next meeting. The Inspector General of Police and the Vice Chancellor will be summoned to offer further insights.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to monitor the situation closely to restore the university’s academic environment.
